How to light a room like a professional

When it comes to lighting the rooms in your house, your aim is to create a relaxed and comfy atmosphere.

You want to create beautiful little glowing lights balanced throughout a room where nothing is overly lit or dark. Lighting transforms a room radically just like repainting or refurnishing and here are some tips to get it right:

What do you use the room for?

Think about the functionality of each room before buying any lights, e.g. cooking, sleeping, working, etc.

When lighting your kitchen you want to create pockets of light everywhere so don’t be shy to light your cabinets, counter tops, work areas etc.

A bathroom benefits from both super bright and soft glow lights and your bedroom needs a reading light and perhaps a decorative ceiling light.

Create layers of light

Different levels of lighting create ambience but are also practical. Try to blend both to create beautifully glowing spaces you can relax and snuggle in but also read your kid’s homework.

Choosing the right bulbs

Low energy bulbs are great for the environment and for occasions when you need super bright light, e.g. reading a book or doing your makeup.

But low energy bulbs can also feel cold and make a room look too clinical. Opt for LED lights to create a softer glow or use low energy lights with lampshades made from silk, velvet or other soft materials to diffuse the clinical look and feel.

Hope this helps and please let us know if you have any other tips- we’d love to hear from you!
